A New Sensory Perception

I Gotta Feelin’

It seems often that when you go through life, you have many paranormal experiences. Perhaps, just perhaps, you may have seen an array of, say, lights in the sky that you presumed to be UFOs. Or maybe, say, you were watching a horror movie with your friend, got bored, and decided to visit a little graveyard in the middle of the night. Maybe you just wanted to see if ghosts and the like were really just all hocus pocus as many claim. But maybe, perhaps, you also heard and/or saw something that you know was pretty much out of this world. Maybe yes, maybe no. But there is one more seemingly paranormal phenomenon that all of us have been exposed to, though at the same time oblivious to. And what am I talking about here? Sixth senses. Though I’m not necessarily talking about ones that, per say, give the ability for one to “see dead people,” many agree that there is some sort of extra-sensory perception acquired if one were to really confront their sixth sense. Some may be skeptical, so let me explain some common phenomenon of this sort.

Common Oddities

Just think about a couple of the past events in your life, and you’ll most likely know what I mean. Need help? I’ll set just a few phenomenons that are pretty common to all of us. First off, there is the happening where you seem to subconsciously look in the direction to where, almost always, the is somebody staring at you. To me, I practically feel as if those eyes themselves are trying to burn me to the spot – oh wait. That was my teenage paranoia talking. Anyways, there are other kinds of phenomenon as well. As another example, think about all the random times where your mind provides images or sounds of things pretty much random. Though they may be just coincidences, those sorts of sights or sounds seem to always occur maybe minutes later. It’s almost as if your mind sees or hears these from the future, and you were there to witness them. But it also seems that these sorts of subconscious predictions are not just limited to sights and sounds – or even any of the five senses for that matter. Sometimes you’ll get this sort of odd feeling , like something bad is heading your way - like the feelings you might get when it seems that you’re driving a bit too quickly, though it’s how you normally drive. Only seconds later, perhaps, you might notice how, say, a car speeds right by where you would’ve been had you not slowed down first. Coincidence or not? In my opinion, I think that these sorts of phenomena are results of adaptations in our brains that made us fit for survival during the course of our past, and perhaps continuing, evolution. This is a bit far-fetched, and because of that, I know that there will be many skeptics of it. And they have valid reasoning; I’m not going to deny that.

Support for Skepticism

Though I personally believe differently, there is plenty of evidence to back up the skeptics’ points against the possibility of the existence of any sixth sense whatsoever. You see, unlike all of the other five senses, any sort of sixth sense as we know it has no bio-mechanical basis. For instance, there is no fixed organ for seeing into the future, unlike the sense of smelling; where we know that the mechanics that happen within the nose are primarily responsible for this. The extraordinary senses that many of us have heard about also occur on an off-and-on basis, so it’s not like we can, say, see the future all the time, quite the contrary of how we can, say, taste something constantly, as long as the food touches our tongues. So it can be said that these sorts of senses can’t be proven using any scientifically, as repetition of the “experiment” would be hit-and-miss. But going against the skeptics, there are other arguments that can be posed that support the plausibility of sixth senses.

Support for Plausibility

Though the existence of sixth senses cannot be proven easily given the above arguments, there are other arguments that can counter so. For one, all of the five senses that we currently know of are only effective if they are hooked up to the brain. Therefore, we know that there are more prerequisites that must be filled from within to execute a sense properly. We already know that there are certain portions of the brain that seem to control the body’s different sensors, so who’s to say that there couldn’t be other sensors that are located outside the brain? We know far too little about the brain still, so how can we be sure that the brain itself doesn’t behave like a natural sensor, and simply interprets what it “sees” without need to pass information through the Nervous System? If that was true, it could explain a whole range of seemingly paranormal, sensory phenomenon that almost all of us have been exposed to at least once in our lives.
